Bolivar Masonic Lodge No. 418 in Sanger, Texas turns its attention from working tools and ritual to caps, gowns, and college acceptance letters. Through its Masonic Lodge Scholarship Program the lodge presents three graduating seniors from Sanger Independent School District (SISD, Texas) with awards that help underwrite tuition, books, fees, or vocational‐training expenses.
Selection is intentionally broad: students headed to four-year universities, community colleges, trade schools, or accredited certification programs are all eligible, because the Brethren believe opportunity should follow talent, not a particular campus address. Applicants submit an essay on service and integrity, letters of recommendation, and a résumé of school and community involvement; a committee of Brethren interview finalists and chooses recipients whose goals reflect both academic promise and a record of helping others.
Why do the Masons devote time and money to this effort?
- First, charity is not an add-on to Freemasonry; it is embedded in every lecture and symbol. Centuries ago operative stonemasons educated apprentices so that the craft would endure; today, speculative Masons invest in young minds so the broader community can flourish.
- Second, the scholarship program is a practical way for the lodge to “square its actions” with its words. Bolivar Masonic Lodge raises funds through pancake breakfasts, trap-shoot outings, Fish Fry activities and civic partnerships, then channels those dollars directly back into the Sanger community, demonstrating that masonry’s light shines brightest at home.
- Finally, the Brethren understand that education is a multiplier: when one graduate gains skills, an entire family’s trajectory can change, and a town’s economic and cultural life is strengthened.
By easing the financial burden on three deserving seniors each year, the lodge plants seeds of aspiration while modeling the virtues of diligence, benevolence, and hope that have guided Freemasons since the cornerstone of Solomon’s Temple was set.
